About Food Day Omaha
About

  • Food Day Omaha is a community organization that celebrates local food-based institutions and leaders who contribute to the Omaha food system. Part of the nationwide Food Day movement for healthy, affordable, and sustainable food, Food Day Omaha encourages the community to "Eat Real."
Food Day's national priorities address overarching concerns within the food system and provide common ground for building the local food movement. Food Day aims to:
  • Promote safer, healthier diets
  • Support sustainable and organic farms
  • Reduce hunger
  • Reform factory farms to protect the environment and animals
  • Support fair working conditions for food and farm workers
At Food Day Omaha, an annual event held at the Omaha Farmers Market in the fall, local food-related organizations provide booths that feature activities, cooking demonstrations, information and awareness about topics such as balanced diet, local growing, cooking, agriculture, food policy issues and hunger. The interactive and  educational event is free and open to the entire community.

In addition to the booth activities, Food Day Omaha Awards are presented to organizations and individuals leading the charge locally to advocate for healthy food policy. Five honorees, nominated by Food Day judges and chosen as the winner by public voting, are named Producer of the Year, Restaurant of the Year, Retailer of the Year, Nonprofit of the Year, and Food Day Champion. Additionally, a lifetime achievement award is presented to an individual who has devoted his or her career to the values of Food Day Omaha.
